How much import duty will I have to pay?

If you are importing goods into the United States there are a number of fees, taxes and tariffs that must be paid.  The amount to be paid varies with the type of goods being imported and their country of origin.

For example, import duty paid on hats depends not only on the material that they are made of, but also on whether they have any braid on them.  In addition to regular duty, there are punitive taxes charged on some categories of goods when imported from certain countries (e.g. there is a 114% anti-dumping duty on pencils imported from China).

The process of calculating which goods carry which types of fees is a complex and specialized process.  It is critical that these fees are calculated correctly because failure to comply with the correct process can result in delays, payment of additional duties, penalties and even criminal prosecution.

For example, did you know that there are very specific requirements for country of origin markings on goods imported into the Unites States.  Failure to properly mark goods could result in a fine or the destruction of the goods.  Changing or obscuring country of origin markings on imported goods is a criminal offence.

In addition to taxes, there are a myriad of other fees that must be paid when importing goods into the Unites States.  For example, US Customs charge for the use of their mandatory Automated Manifest System, the port charges a harbor maintenance fee, and so on.

Some fees are discretionary and cannot be anticipated.  For example if US Customs and Border Protection decide to look inside your container you have to pay for it to be unloaded, x-rayed and re-loaded.  This can easily cost several thousand dollars.

Our China sourcing service quotes a single price in advance that includes all taxes, tariffs and fees so that you will know exactly what your final cost will be before placing your order.
